Another ally in the great effort for the treatment of childhood cancer was gained by the ‘Marianna V. Vardinoyannis – Elpida’ Children’s Oncology Unit, with the signing of the Twinning Agreement with the Children’s’ Hospital of Beijing, one of the largest hospitals of the People’s Republic of China.
Mrs Marianna V. Vardinoyannis, President of the ELPIDA Association, together with the Director of Agia Sofia and P&A Kyriakou Children’s Hospitals, Manolis Papasavvas, and members of the Board of the ELPIDA Association, welcomed on Monday, 4 November 2019, the President of the Beijing Children’s Hospital, Mr Ni Xin, the General Director of the Beijing Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Mr. Tu Zhitao, and other members of the Chinese delegation.
“I feel truly and deeply moved by today’s Twinning of our Hospital with the Children’s Hospital of Beijing. One of the largest children’s hospitals in the world, with a crucial role worldwide in the advancement of paediatric medicine, which combines medical care, research and education. Currently, in our Oncology Unit, 3 out of 4 children fully recover, and we are now aiming for 4 out of 4 children. A goal which we all believe we can achieve, which is why we are upgrading our Hospital into a “Center of Excellence” with the most modern equipment and the ongoing training of our doctors abroad. We have the same goal, through the development of the Hospital’s research sector, in cooperation with large institutions, such as the Dana Farber Institute of the Harvard University and the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens. In 2013 we launched the Twinning Programme, aiming at our collaboration with large hospitals across the world, which will help in this effort. Our vision is to bring people together through medicine, for a world without borders in children’s health. The “Map of Peace and Hope” which you see on this wall has been designed to remind us of our alliances. We have already signed twinning agreements with hospitals in the United States of America, Canada, Netherlands, Cyprus, Turkey, Israel, Azerbaijan, Serbia, Egypt, Georgia and Albania, and more will follow. It is our great honour to have the flag of China adorning our map from this day on, marking our collaboration which starts today, and our hope is that it will bear fruit, especially during the new era of the fight against childhood cancer, such as, for example, gene and cell treatments,” Mrs Vardinoyannis said in her welcoming address to the Chinese delegation.
Mr Manolis Papasavvas spoke about the Children’s Oncology Unit and the Twinning Programme with top hospitals across the world. “What unites our two Hospitals is our willingness to find the best treatments for winning the fight against childhood cancer. Through a broad network of collaborations of the “Twinning Programme,” we seek out anything new and innovative in our research of childhood cancer.”
The President of the Children’s Hospital of Beijing, Mr Ni Xin, noted that the signing of the collaboration Agreement is a desire of the Chinese government, and it is highly important for the collaboration between the two countries: “China and Greece are two countries separated by many kilometers, but they are unified by the shared goal of everything we do for our children. The ELPIDA Association has done many great things, and our Hospital has a long history of 77 years. With this agreement, we will have a shared database for the exchange of knowledge and data from this day forward. I am certain that we will do great work against childhood cancer, on a global level.”
The General Director of the Beijing Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Mr Tu Zhitao, spoke about a very important agreement: “This day and today’s ceremony are very important. We are all touched by the activity and contribution of ELPIDA. I believe that this collaboration will improve the level of contribution in the fight against childhood cancer, and we will have the best result.”
Mrs Vardinoyannis awarded honorary plaques to Mr Xin and Mr Zhitao. After that they placed the flag of the People’s Republic of China on the “ELPIDA Map of Peace and Hope,” as well as the star of the University Children’s Hospital of Beijing on the “ELPIDA Wall of Stars.”
