Hope (elpida in Greek) is a very powerful word. A very fundamental concept. It exudes optimism and consolation, aspiration and expectation, positive thinking as regards the present and the future. If we chose to give the name “ELPIDA” to our Association of Friends of Children with Cancer, it was precisely because we wanted to convey the message that science and social interest can enhance and change the lives of sick children and fill them with hope for the future.
Twenty years after “ELPIDA” was founded, we are in the fortunate position of being able to state with certainty that this hope has become a happy reality for hundreds of children. It has become new life. A hopeful life. And that the word “hope” has become for our Association an even more powerful concept since it incorporates humanity, solidarity, generosity, hard work and selfless contribution, since its message encompasses social mobilization.
All the members of the Association have undertaken a single commitment: that in a changing world, in the new Europe that is being born, the hope for a better life for sick children will always remain alive. Hope for life. Stand for life. Act for life.
