On Monday, June 19, 2017, the Ambassador of Palestine to Greece, Marwan Toubassi, on behalf of the President of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, presented the President of the Association of Friends of Children with Cancer “ELPIDA”, Marianna V. Vardinoyannis with the Medal of Honour and Distinction. The award recognised her great humanitarian work and her role in promoting friendship between the two peoples.

Mr Toubassi said: "Today we have gathered here to honour a distinguished lady who has devoted her life to humanity, to peace, to the prosperity of people and to the creation of a better world through her many actions, not only at national level but also internationally. Mrs Vardinoyannis, for your total contribution and recognition of your great humanitarian work, allow me, on behalf of my President, Mr Mahmoud Abbas, to award you the Medal of Honour and Distinction.

Mr Toubassi thanked Mrs Vardinoyannis for opening her heart to provide hospital care to sick children in Palestine and to host them at the Association’s hostel. Mrs Vardinoyannis commented: "I feel humble and deeply grateful that you are honouring our work for the children's good and our fight against childhood cancer. This fight is the result of a great collective effort, an effort by doctors, nurses and the "ELPIDA" staff and I accept this medal of behalf of them in this ‘fortress’ hospital where our visions have become reality.

“I thank you from the bottom of my heart for this honour, for your emotional and kind words, and for the personal efforts you make to strengthen the bridge of solidarity and friendship between our societies and the fact that, from the first moment you came to our country, you have been a good friend and a great ally for us.
