Events organised by "Elpida"

The major events organized by the Association aim at supporting its work as well as raising awareness and mobilizing public opinion as regards its activities.  Because ELPIDA believes that for a message to be powerful it must be embraced and supported by many: by society itself.

The events organized by ELPIDA include concerts and ballet performances by internationally famous artists, auctions of works of art, telemarathons, plays, fashion shows, charity gala dinners, bazaars, etc.

Through these events thousands of people become, even for a few hours, the volunteers of love while at the same time, through the special brochures and printed material that accompany each event as well as the extensive publicity given to ELPIDA by the mass media, public opinion is informed and awareness is raised regarding the work of the Association.

A few of the most important events organized by ELPIDA are the following:

Nana Mouschouri (January 1994) and Agnes Baltsa (February 1992) were first world famous artists who sang for “ELPIDA”.

While internationally renowned composers such as Vangelis (July 1993) and Jean Michel Jarre (June 2001) offered “ELPIDA” concerts that were broadcast on television all over the world.  Vangelis’ “Mythodea” and Jean Michel Jarre’s “Hymn to the Acropolis” were composed especially for the ELPIDA concerts and served to publicize not only the Association but Greece itself on an international scale.

With their voice and their art Julio Iglesias (September 1999), Vanessa Mae (May 2000), Andrea Bocelli (June 2003), Luciano Pavarotti (June 2004) offered brilliant evenings at the Theater of Herod Atticus while the Maurice Béjart Ballet (June 2002)  and the English National Ballet (June 1996) danced and were warmly embraced by audiences.

In the summer of 2005 Giorgos Dalaras and the Portuguese fado singer Dulce Pontes and in May 2006 Marinella bewitched audiences who packed the Theater of Herod Atticus. They were followed by the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Yuri Temirkanov with Dimitris Sgouros as soloist (June 2007) and the Orchestra and Choir of the Musical Florentine May conducted by Ricardo Muti (July 2008).

One of the concerts with the biggest (particularly young) audiences was the one given by Despina Vandi at the Peace and Friendship Stadium (March 2001), while a very special concert was the one given by the Choir of the Archdiocese of North and South America gave a concert at the Zappeion Peristyle in early June of 2008 in the presence of His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios (june 2008). Most recently there was the concert by soprano Anastasia Zanni at the Pallas Theater, accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra of the Municipality of Athens Musical Ensembles and a 50-member choir (December 2011).

Telemarathons organized by ELPIDA in collaboration with Mega Channel (1999 and 2007) and ALPHA tv (2006) were also a resounding success.

The telemarathon of 1999 did not only support the work of ELPIDA but also the children-victims of the war in Yugoslavia, while the major telemarathons of 2006 (Alpha) and 2007 (Mega) laid the first foundations for ELPIDA’s First Oncology Hospital for Children.

The dazzling fashion shows organized by ELPIDA included those by Escada (September 1991), Christian Dior (April 1999) and Oscar de la Renta (May 2001) while Oscar de la Renta himself honored the show with his presence and visited the ELPIDA Guest House.

Among the most successful gala dinners organized by ELPIDA was the one given in London within the framework of Anna Vissi's mega-concert (March 2000), the dinner at the National Gallery on the occasion of the El Greco exhibit and the Dinner of Love which was also attended by young people who are students today but who were once children undergoing treatment thanks to the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit and the ELPIDA Guest House (February 2010). The evening of dinner and dance "Tango Night" at the Athenaeum Intercontinental Hotel was also special (February 2012).

The "20 companies for 20 years of ELPIDA" Association initiative bywhich 20 companies with a long and leading participation in our country's economic life took action in support of the work of the Association was significant (April-September 2010).

Since 2005 ELPIDA'S Christmas Bazaars have become a successful institution and an opportunity for members and friends of the Association to meet.
